They made an appearance at breakfast, where Myra made sure their tail saw them even though he was still trying to be discrete. The dragon king of Chicago hired good people.
The dining car was quiet as she and Christopher had chosen to eat early. Their tail was already there, which made her wonder how long exactly heâd been sitting in the dining car, nursing a coffee. The meal was a decent collection of eggs and cooked meats and toast. Christopher, somewhat to her surprise, didnât like eggs. To no oneâs surprise, the dragon did eat a lot of the meat put in front of him.
There were less whispers this morning. Too many people too tired and up too early to bother with gossip, but Christopher still drew the gazes of those around them.
She forced herself to sit still through a second cup of coffee and to watch some of the passing scenery, attempting to appear calm and unconcerned that they were being watched and followed. Both she and the tail knew what was happening. Heâd know Christopher was aware of his presence now, too. But all three of them were doing a bang-up job of appearing to ignore each other. It was pretty impressive, really, if Myra did say so herself.
By the time she and Christopher left the dining car, though, she was ready to move. She was capable of sitting still. She did often. Or maybe sometimes. But when she was excited, she didnât sit still very well. She gave their tail a little wave on the way out, which startled him into waving back. She grinned at his scowl.
Once back in their suite, without even speaking, she and Christopher gathered up their small backpacksâthe extent of their luggageâand bid goodbye to the small cabin. Christopher removed his shirt as they walked down the narrow corridor, stuffed it into his backpack, then slung the pack over his shoulders, centering it. Unlike her wider pack, his was long, and narrow, and not like a normal human backpack. His sat along his spine, leaving lots of room around his shoulder blades.
She studiously ignored the fact that he was shirtless, more amused by the fact that heâd shucked off his shoes the instant theyâd returned from their meal and those were already inside his pack. He really didnât like wearing shoes.
At the gangway at the rear of the train, where there were currently no train staff, Myra hunted up the emergency hatch. The thing most people didnât know even existed, but which allowed access to the roof of the train. If sheâd been on her own, sheâd have had to use some sticky grips on the walls and ceiling to climb up to the hatch and get it open. But with Christopher hereâ¦
âBoost me up,â she said, turning her back to him. He lifted her by the waist, holding her up as if she weighed less than his shoes. There went those stomach tingles again.
She finessed the alarm set on the hatch with a small spell and then pulled the handle out and down, pushing up on the heavy chunk of metal.
